Can Tea Help Improve Your Oral Health?

Posted on 2/25/2019 by Rho Family Dentistry
Can Tea Help Improve Your Oral Health? If you drink a lot of coffee or soda, we may have already talked to you about what those drinks are doing to your teeth. The sugar in them will feed bacteria, leading to cavities and gum disease.

While some teas also have sugar in them, green tea is a great option that can actually help your oral health in a number of different ways. If you feel like you need caffeine to get your day going, it's also a much better alternative to coffee or soda.

Why Green Tea?
There have been a number of studies done on green tea and its benefits. Many of these studies point to compounds in green tea that help fight off infection and reduce inflammation as the reason why this drink helps keep your mouth healthy. The tea is also high in antioxidants, and many studies have shown the benefits of antioxidants for not only your oral health but also your overall physical well-being.

The Benefits of Green Tea

Green tea has a number of different benefits. One of the main reasons we recommend green tea over other types of tea is because it actually lowers the acidity of your mouth. This helps to prevent cavities and kills bacteria. One study showed that rinsing your mouth with green tea for as little as five minutes actually helped reduce bacteria and bleeding of the gums.

Another benefit is that green tea actually helps keep your gums healthier. It helps reduce the risk of periodontal disease, which in turn helps reduce the risk of tooth loss.

Dealing with bad breath? Green tea can help with that, too. It helps keep the bacteria that cause bad breath under control, removing the smell. Studies have shown that green tea is actually better than gum and mints, both of which tend to only mask the smell rather than kill the bacteria that cause it.
