Teeth Whitening
Sacramento CA

woman smiling showing Teeth Whitening procedure difference at Rho Family Dentistry When you smile, your teeth become very prominent. While your teeth may be only a small part of your mouth, their appearance can make or break the impressions you leave on those around you. Discoloration can significantly dull the beauty of your smile, and can even lead to self-consciousness. If you are self-conscious about your smile, you often do anything in your power to hide it. Small actions like smiling behind your hand or behind tight lips can leave the wrong impression. At Rho Family Dentistry we can restore the brilliance to your smile with tooth whitening.

Causes of Discoloration

There are several different factors that can contribute to the discoloration of your naturally bright white enamel.
•  What you eat and drink. Coffee, tea, red wine, dark berries, tomato-based sauces, curries, these are just some of the foods and drinks that can stain your teeth. They all contain dark pigments that stick to the surfaces of your enamel, dulling their color.
•  Cigarettes and other tobacco products. These products all contain numerous harmful chemicals. Tar and nicotine are the two main contributing components to discoloration.
•  Certain types of medications. Medications such as blood pressure medication, asthma medication and certain antibiotics can lead to deep stains.

Why Not Just Use the Over Counter Products?

There are several whitening products available over the counter. These products include toothpaste, mouthwashes, strips, gels, pens and more. They all promise to provide amazing results in a short period. While they are often advertised as affordable, these products all contain very low levels of bleaching agents. This means that it can take several treatments before you even see minor results. You have to keep buying more, and the cost can add up. Even after several treatments, you still might not see the results you were hoping for.

Chairside Whitening

There are two ways in which your teeth can be whitened. The first is called chairside whitening. This type of whitening is done right here in our office. It takes only an hour of your time. First, we clean your teeth. We then place a lip retractor in your mouth to keep your mouth open. A professional whitening gel is then applied to the surfaces of your teeth. The active ingredient in the whitening gel is either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. After the gel is applied, a special light is shone over your mouth. The light activates the active ingredient and works to enhance the results. The peroxide begins to break down, forming tiny oxygen bubbles that enter into the enamel of your teeth. They work to bleach away stains in the enamel and the dentin. With just one treatment your teeth can be made several shades whiter.

Take Home Trays

Take home trays are a professional whitening treatment that is designed to allow you to whiten your teeth at home. They require two visits to get.
•  At your first appointment, we take digital impressions of your mouth, which are then used to create your custom trays.
•  At your second appointment, we provide you with the trays, the bleaching agent, and instructions for use. The trays are meant to be worn for several hours twice a day, or overnight while you sleep.
•  The exact length of your treatment depends on your discoloration and your goals. You typically start to see results in about a week.
