Why you should floss

Posted on 9/25/2023 by Rho Family Dentistry
Why you should flossThe one question you should expect during every dental visit is how frequently you floss. For most people flossing is not as important. They could not be more wrong. Brushing alone is not enough to maintain perfect oral health.

Interdental cleaner

Flossing is interdental in nature. Brushing simply addresses the top and outer surfaces of the teeth. What happens to the plaque hiding in between the teeth then? That is where flossing comes in. Flossing reaches the tight zones in between the teeth to get rid of all the tartar accumulation. Dentists advise that flossing before brushing is more effective.

Gum protection

Gums are the soft and sensitive tissues that cover the jaw and the bones. Flossing plays a critical role in the area in which the gums and the teeth meet. Due to the hidden nature of the region, plaque may build up and harden. This build-up is what causes gingivitis and periodontitis if not promptly treated. Gingivitis is just but the initial stage of gum disease. You may begin to notice redness and swelling in the gums. In extreme cases, the gums may bleed as you brush or floss. A severe form of gum inflammation may result in bone and tooth loss.

Prevention against other diseases

A single act of flossing at least once a day can save you tons of money. Any opportunity to save on medical expenses is a once-in-a-lifetime chance that you do not want to miss. The effect of tooth and gum disease goes just beyond the oral cavity. Harmful bacteria in the mouth can result in other conditions such as diabetes, heart failure, or respiratory complications. Bacterial overgrowth may travel to the bloodstream causing clogged arteries and eventual cardiac rest.

Think of flossing as one small simple step that will greatly impact your overall health in the long run. If the traditional waxed or unwaxed kind of floss is uncomfortable to use, there are other options worth considering. You could consider using either a water or air flosser instead.
