How Can I Tell if My Tooth Is Infected After a Crown?
Posted on 10/15/2023 by Rho Family Dentistry
Crown placement is an ideal cosmetic procedure for people who have cracked, chipped, discolored, or any other tooth mishap. After a crown placement, you need to critically check your dental health to prevent any oral issues that may occur. An infection around the dental crown can cause serious problems which may require prompt attention. Here are some symptoms that may indicate a potential condition after a crown placement:
Pain or Discomfort
Crown placement is a minimally invasive procedure involving cementing a customized crown on your tooth. After the process, you can expect minimal pain or discomfort, likely disappearing after a few days. However, if you experience excruciating pain or discomfort around the crown, it can indicate infection.
Swelling
Swelling is another symptom that signifies a potential infection of your teeth. The gums of the surrounding area might swell and, in most instances, become very tender. Other symptoms associated with swelling are redness and temperature changes around that region.
Sensitivity
Another common symptom that might indicate infection is sensitivity to extreme temperatures. This will be felt mostly when you consume hot or cold substances. The sensitivity can be localized at the gum region where the crown has been placed.
Pus or Discharge
Pus or discharge is another common indication of an underlying infection. You can notice pus or discharge oozing around the area where the crown was placed. This is an obvious sign of disease and you need to seek medical attention immediately.
Difficulty in Chewing or Biting
After the crown is placed, you can resume chewing and grinding on food immediately. However, if you find it uncomfortable or difficult to chew, it can be a sign of infection. Ensure you discuss with your dentist any of these symptoms for prompt treatment. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications.
