Should I Get Sedation for Oral Surgery?

Posted on 12/1/2023 by Weo Admin
Woman in sedation at Rho Family Dentistry in Sacramento, CAMany people believe that oral surgery is scary and painful. While this may have been the case many decades ago, it is untrue that oral surgery is painful. Thanks to modern medicine, oral surgery procedures do not cause pain or discomfort. Sedation is a major way modern medicine keeps dental patients comfortable and pain-free during oral surgery.

When Do Dentist Recommend Sedation?

Dentists recommend sedation for patients who are about to undergo oral surgery. Sedation helps patients to relax during oral surgery. Dentists often suggest sedation for patients who have anxiety, fear of needles, or extreme teeth sensitivity. They also offer sedation to special needs patients and patients with very sensitive gag reflexes.

Types Of Sedation Offered

There are many types of sedation that a dentist may recommend. The type of sedation your dentist will recommend depends on several factors, including the type of procedure, levels of anxiety, and the severity and type of condition.

Oral Sedation

In this method, the dentist administers the sedation orally as pills. The patient will take the pill an hour before the surgery, allowing time for the medicine to take full effect before surgery. The dose the dentist administers will determine the level of sedation. In a minimal dose, the patient is relaxed but awake.

Intravenous Sedation

In intravenous sedation, the dentist will place the sedative into your bloodstream through an IV. In this method, the dentist can adjust the dosage during the procedure. The dentist also monitors your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels throughout the procedure.

Inhaled Sedation

Inhaled sedation entails the use of nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. The dentist will place a mask over the nose of the patient and then administer the gas. This gas causes the patient to relax by creating euphoria.

The best way to determine if you should get sedation during oral surgery is to consult with your dentist. The dentist will go over your entire medical history before the procedure and determine if you are eligible to receive sedation. Thus, it is important to provide all of your medical details, including any medication that you are taking.
