Myths to Be Aware of That May Result in Poor Oral Health

Myths to Be Aware of That May Result in Poor Oral HealthWhen it comes to your oral health, believing some myths can actually harm your teeth. That's why it is so important to separate fact from fiction. By identifying some common oral health myths, you can take steps to avoid them.

You Don't Need Fluoridated Water

Fluoride is incredibly effective at preventing cavities and decay. In fact, most municipalities now include fluoride in their community water supplies. Regardless of age, gender, or other factors, all people can benefit from the preventive effects of fluoride when it comes to tooth decay.

Bleeding Gums Aren't a Big Deal

Some people think that bleeding gums are just a natural occurrence and nothing to worry about. However, bleeding gums are actually one of the first signs of gum disease, so you should take them seriously. In its earliest stages, gingivitis can usually be reversed with better brushing and flossing, so use this information wisely in order to improve your oral health.

Cavities Are Only Caused by Sugar

It is true that too much sugar can increase your tooth decay risk, but this isn't the only culprit. Even if you don't eat a lot of sugar, you can be at risk of cavities if you fail to floss and brush properly. Starchy foods like breads and crackers are also high in carbohydrates that can cause plaque in which bacteria can reside.

You Should Brush Immediately after Eating

You may believe that you should brush your teeth immediately after eating in order to keep your teeth healthy. However, you can actually do more harm than good. Acids make your enamel vulnerable and brushing during this time can cause further damage.
