Ways that Dental Lasers Can Improve Your Oral Health

Ways that Dental Lasers Can Improve Your Oral HealthAs is true of the medical field, the dentistry field is always searching for innovative techniques to help preserve and improve your oral health. Dental research involves not only drugs, toothpastes, and floss, but also better techniques and tools to fix any dental problems you may have.

One of these innovative tools is laser technology. Yes, it's true; dentists can use lasers, too. The great thing about lasers used in the dental arena is that they can be adjusted to make them work for each individual patient. They are not a one size fits all kind of thing.

What Can Lasers Be Used For?

Gum disease is one of the most devastating conditions you can have. Aside from making your gums look bad, if left untreated, it can cause you to lose your teeth, your jawbone can weaken, and you could need oral surgery just to correct the effects of the disease. Typically, scaling and root planing are the procedures performed to correct gum recession, one of the results of gum disease. This procedure involves cleaning not only the surfaces of your teeth, but also the roots of your teeth which have been exposed due to the disease.

Laser treatments have changed that. When lasers are used to correct the problem, they not only preserve the tissue, but they stimulate the stem cells so that they will create new collagen and bone. This then crowns around the tooth and regenerates the lost ligaments.

When you have gum disease, it is imperative to remove the bacteria from the teeth and the gum pockets. Lasers not only remove the bacteria, but they also kill the bacteria. They also help reduce the swelling and bleeding of the gums that are typically a result of the traditional treatment. Since the treatments with a laser are less invasive, the healing and recovery time are shorter. In addition, the procedure itself takes less time.
