How to Minimize the Damage Acids Do to Your Teeth

How to Minimize the Damage Acids Do to Your TeethA lot of enamel can be worn away by the acids in the foods and drinks we enjoy. When acids are strong, they can cause irreversible damage to our teeth's enamel and put us at risk for other dental problems like premature tooth decay and gum disease.

This is why it is important to eat foods and drinks like pickles and fruit juices in moderation. However, everyone loves to eat some of these acidic foods every now and again, so what are some precautions you can take besides moderation to save your tooth enamel?

Tips to Deal with Acids in Food and Drink

If you enjoy having the occasional soda and just cannot live without it, it may be useful to utilize a drinking straw whenever you decide to enjoy one. Using a straw will help to make sure the acidic liquid will not touch a lot of your teeth. This will help preserve your tooth enamel as less contact means less time to eat away at your enamel. It is also advisable to avoid swishing any acidic liquids around in your mouth like mouthwash.

You can also help to control the acidity level in your mouth by having some cheese or milk at the end of your meal. Milk has an acidity level which is very close to your mouth's natural acidity level. By drinking milk, you can help mitigate some of the acid that remains in your mouth after a meal. Cheese, on the other hand, is good at protecting the teeth while also lowering the acidity level in your mouth.

The cheese is able to create a small protective film over the teeth protecting them from acid. If you do not have any milk or cheese in your meal, you can always rinse your mouth with water after you eat. Rinsing your mouth with water will help remove some acid from the surfaces of the teeth keeping them safe from wear. If you have any more questions or would like any more information regarding how to protect your teeth from acids, give us a call and we will answer anything we can.
