Everyone is afraid of something. Some people are afraid of dogs. There are other people that are afraid of thunderstorms or clowns. More than a few people are afraid of the dentist. In fact, nearly 75% of Americans have at least some fear of the dentist. About 10% of those Americans fear the dentist enough to call it a phobia. If you are one of those people that are worried about the dentist, we're here to tell you that you need to go. In fact, it might be far scarier not to go to the dentist than it is to go. Here are some reasons why you need to come and see us even if you are afraid. It Prolongs the Life of Your Teeth and GumsIf you don't come see us for regular checkups, are risking your teeth and gums. You could lose teeth due to tooth decay. Bacteria are always present in your mouth. If you brush and floss your teeth twice a day, every day, your chances of having a cavity are smaller. However, if you don't see us, a little cavity becomes a painful infection that could cause you to lose that tooth. You can also lose teeth due to gum disease. Like tooth decay, gum disease starts out small. You can have an inflammation of your gums, which is called gingivitis. Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. If you get it treated right away, gum disease can be cured. However, if you wait for treatment, you may lose gum tissue and teeth to gum disease. It Protects Your Body As WellThere are many diseases that are hazardous to your health or even fatal if you don't catch them early. Many of those diseases can be spotted early by coming in for a routine checkup. Examples of these diseases are diabetes, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and oral cancer.
