Aftercare For Dental Implants

Posted on 3/22/2021 by Rho Family Dentistry
Aftercare For Dental ImplantsA dental implant is fit directly into your jawbone in order to replace a missing tooth. Once an implant is fixed, the surrounding bone slowly fuses to it and holds it securely in place.

Three common types of dental implants are endosteal, subperiosteal, and zygomatic implants. Here are some aftercare procedures that help with healing:

Controlling Swelling and Discomfort

Some bleeding, swelling, and discomfort is normal after implant surgery. You may also observe red saliva after the procedure. These are minor issues which tend to disappear after a day or two. To relieve pain and reduce swelling, you can opt for over-the-counter medicines, such as ibuprofen. Prescription pain medicines and antibiotics can also be considered.

Eating and Drinking

It is highly recommended to have cold drinks on the day you get your surgery done. Avoid spicy food, hot drinks, and alcoholic beverages. It is advisable to not eat anything until the anesthesia wears off. Although it may be initially difficult to eat meals, try to have nutritious food to gain energy and heal faster.

Choose to eat softer foods and make sure you chew away from the implant area. Steer clear of foods such as popcorn or seeded fruit, as they tend to get stuck in the teeth and cause infection.

Oral Hygiene

Maintaining oral hygiene is important to expedite the healing process, but make sure you do not go overboard. Avoid cleaning overzealously, as it can interfere with healing.

On the day of the implant, you may brush and floss near the area but skip the rinsing. You may start rinsing with a warm saltwater solution from the next day, especially after meals. After a few days pass, use a Q-tip and a cleaning solution to gingerly clean around the implant.

After your implant surgery, you can usually resume a normal diet after 7-10 days. If you have any other concerns regarding dental implants or dentistry in general, reach out to us at Rho Family Dentistry by giving us a call at (916) 562-2755 today.
