Why Do Athletes Often Have More Oral Health Issues?

Posted on 9/21/2021 by Rho Family Dentistry
Why Do Athletes Often Have More Oral Health Issues? While exercise is good for your body, some athletes suffer from higher risks of tooth decay. This statistic could be the result of several factors.

What do Athletes Eat and Drink?

While some athletes train their bodies and discipline themselves to eat healthy foods, others do not. Athletes who drink sports drinks to restore their electrolytes could be putting their oral health at risk. Sports gum, sports gel, and electrolyte drinks contain both acids and sugars. The sugar invites bad bacteria to flourish. If you have a sweet tooth for sports drinks, you are more susceptible to cavities. Sugar is a primary antagonist for the enamel on your teeth. If you are constantly drinking sugary beverages, your teeth may struggle to combat tooth decay. The acid in these acidic foods and beverages can erode the tooth enamel. This process, called decalcification, can lead to cavities in the teeth. Cavities are tiny holes where acids have penetrated through the hard enamel covering of the tooth. If the enamel dissolves, it does not grow back.

Drink Water For Healthy Teeth

We advise our patients who are athletes to pay careful attention to what they put into their mouths. Limit beverages that contain acids and sugars. Water continues to be our top choice to hydrate your body and benefit your mouth. Water satisfies your thirst, is usually cheaper, and is good for your entire body.
