What Is Oral Pathology?

Posted on 3/7/2022 by Rho Family Dentistry
What Is Oral Pathology?Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection that affects the gums and other tissues around the teeth, causing them to swell, become tender, and bleed easily. The most common types of oral pathology are gingivitis and periodontitis. But there are other forms of oral pathology, too, which affect the soft tissues in and around the mouth. Keep reading to find out other common pathology diseases.

What Oral Pathology Entails

A pathologist is a doctor who studies disease by examining tissues and cells. Oral pathologists specialize in diseases of the mouth, including gingivitis, oral cancer, periodontal disease, tooth decay, and tooth loss. Pathologists may use diagnostic tests such as X-rays, biopsies, and tissue cultures to help determine if a person has any of these conditions. Treatment options vary based on what type of condition an individual has. The treatment can range from simple flossing every day to full-mouth reconstruction surgery with implants. An essential part of treatment is educating patients about their diagnoses so that they can make educated decisions about how to take care of their mouths.

Oral Pathology Procedure

Oral pathologists can perform a wide range of diagnostic and surgical procedures to determine what is causing a patient's symptoms. However, most of these fall into one or two categories: biopsies and evaluations. Biopsies are intended to diagnose disease and can be either non-invasive or invasive. In most cases, it is the non-invasive tests that are performed. It involves mouth tissues being removed through physical means such as scraping or light abrasion. This does not require surgery and is usually successful.

How Do Dentists Treat Oral Pathology

Pathologists are great diagnosticians who have extensive experience in pathology diseases. They know what to administer and tell you to prevent these pathology diseases.
